My Story

Me Dan Metcalfe ( Wheelsdan)
I'm a paralyzed disabled, kinda athlete .

Here is some info about me , what I'm doing this mammoth challenge for and a big reason I'm doing this not just for charity but to actually help someone directly too! Please read below....

About me .

Without blowing my own trumpet lol.
I am a t8 complete paraplegic so no movement or feeling from just above my belly button down . I was a builder for 10 years then. 22/06/2014 I was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident . I took to sports and alot of them , and did quite well but stuck with mainly hand cycling I worked up to 5th in the UK then 28/06/2018 on a 600 mile charity ride a car crashed into me yep that hurt . I had compression of c4 in my neck and it damaged my left shoulder. That was my racing career out the window
After this I carried on my new found love for scuba diving and last year 28/09/2022 I set 3 world records in scuba diving.  I've also throughout the years done lots of other crazy events, tough mudder, abseiling, sit ski and hand cycling events but this challenge isn't about any of these its about the multiple half marathons I've done in my day chair not a race chair and the mammoth task of the London marathon!

What am I doing this for ?

So it's been on the radar for a while but I said this year I wasn't going to do any big challenges 🤔 well that changed didn't it lol . I'm pushing myself to another level and doing the London marathon not only for spinal Research but for a young man called Ross who wants to make a 15 minute documentary on me taking on this crazy challenge for his final university project in sports journalism. Also it's one of my big goals as I'm a can do kinda guy  I live my life to smash barriers and boundaries setting new heights for disabled people! .

The message from Ross

Hi guys, my name is Ross and I am going to be documenting Dan’s journey as he undertakes the incredible task of doing the London Marathon on behalf of Spinal Research.

Below is some information about me and why I am teaming up with Dan to show the first-hand account of what it’s like for a wheelchair-user to conquer this massive feat.

What is the reason for me doing the documentary?
I myself am a 3rd year Sports Journalism student at the University of Lincoln and been asked to record a 15-minute documentary. This could be on anything, or anyone related to Lincolnshire and after doing some research I came across Dan’s inspirational story.

I really feel that Dan’s story is one that needs to be told and that could help inspire many others, whether that be those that face adversity after injuries, people who struggle with their mental health or in a general sense, help bring awareness to these and other issues we hope to cover whilst filming.

I am also looking forward to getting some experience myself of what it’s like to train in a wheelchair. I absolutely hope to cover this to display to our audience the physical and mental capabilities that you would need for this marathon, which I feel many might not know so much about.

Any donations towards Dan’s project would be greatly appreciated and would go to such a good cause so if you feeling generous then please donate all you can thank you .

All the best and see you at the finish line :)

Ross.
