My Story

I'm running the London 2023 Marathon for Maggie's!

Maggie's provide free practical support and information for people living with cancer and their families.

Maggies Southampton supported my family massively during the hardest times of our lives, so I have set out to raise money to help them do the same for others.

My Dad fell ill during the summer of 2021 and was eventually diagnosed with high grade Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in November that year in Southampton General Hospital. He received amazing care from the medical staff there for the next 10 months. During that time he endured months of gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as numerous biopsies, scans, lumbar punctures and transfusions.   He was incredibly brave and throughout his treatment dealt with everything with a great sense of humour.

My Mum moved over from Guernsey to be with him and ended up staying there for the entire 10 months. At the beginning of Dad’s time in Southampton we were told about Maggie’s and it became a very important place for our family.  The staff and volunteers were always there with a smiling welcome and advice should it be needed. The atmosphere was so calm and peaceful; it felt a million miles from the clinical and intense atmosphere of the hospital  - despite the Centre being only a few hundred yards away in the car park.  Maggie’s truly became a haven for Mum and Dad during their time in Southampton and when we visited them we benefited from the support there too.  At various points Dad received his treatment as an outpatient and was able to enjoy visiting the Centre and talking to people who really understood the situation he found himself in.  Despite having tried so hard to overcome his cancer, Dad sadly passed away in September 2022.  After we lost him I decided to do something positive in his memory, which is why I am running the Marathon to raise funds for Maggie’s as a way of giving back to a charity which means so much to us.

Please support me in this challenge by donating what you can to support people with cancer.
