My Story

Dougie Wright

I've been a volunteer member of the RNLI at Exmouth Lifeboat Station for over three years and I am qualified to crew on both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats at Exmouth. It's quite a busy station and we are regularly called to a variety of different rescue situations, often in extremely rough sea conditions, where people have got into serious difficulty in or on the water. So I know first-hand of the importance of the RNLI as a lifesaving charity and how it funds the essential training and equipment to enable us to continue to save everyone at sea. But none of that could happen without the kindness and generosity of those good enough to donate money to the charity.

Since I volunteered I have taken part in several fund raising events to raise funds for the RNLI. I completed the RNLI Reindeer Run competition in 2020, running a marathon in 3 hours and 49 minutes raising nearly £500. The following May I took part in the Exmouth RNLI '72 for 72', a 72 kilometer relay along Exmouth seafron with a fellow crewmate Geoff Mills raising nearly £4,000 and in June last year, with other Exmouth RNLI crew, I entered the gruelling CrossFit challange, raising a further £1,500.

This year as part of the wider fundraising campaign, I asked the students from Bicton College Military and Protective Services Academy to help plan, deliver and execute a physical challenge to help raise funds. They did not dissapoint.

At 15:00 on Tuesday 28 February 2023, the academy will start the gruilling 4x4x48 challenge, created by former Navy Seal, David Goggins. This involves running 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 hours. This is simplistic in nature but immensely difficult. The challenge will take place from 15:00 on Tuesday 28 February, with the final run leaving at 11:00 on Thursday 02 March. The students have put so much time and effort into this, it is going to be a great couple of days.

The RNLI is extremely important to me and that is why I am pleased to have been accepted into the London Marathon 2023 and to be given another oppotunity to raise funds for the charity that saves everyone at sea in the UK and Ireland.

I am really looking forward to it and would like to thank everyone in advance for their kind support.
