My Story

The last time I ran the London Marathon I just about made it across the finish line on my last legs. My time was about 4 hours, I think, I can't remember exactly. It was 27 years ago and I was 34 years old.

This April I'll be running the London Marathon to raise money for Southampton Hospitals charity at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) where I am on the Board as Associate Non-Executive Director. I have specifically requested that donations go to the Children's Hospital. The money will fund better facilities for the children and their parents, pioneering research, and world-class treatments.

Not just running to get around mind you, I'll be attempting to run faster than I did in 1996. Faster than 3 hours 45 minutes.

Your sponsorship means a lot to me and your money will go to a great cause. UHS is a wonderful hospital with great people who go above and beyond every day. I have seen firsthand the incredible work they do, sometimes under tough conditions with insufficient resources.

UHS is a leading healthcare provider in the UK, serving more than 3.7 million people in Southern England and the Channel Islands. From specialist services such as neurosurgery, cardiac, and children's intensive care, to maternity, oncology, pathology and major trauma, its 13,000 staff care for patients 24/7. UHS is also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton.

On a personal note, I am indebted to UHS for the care and kindness shown to my father-in-law, Reg Edmonds, as he fought prostate cancer till the end.

I will share regular updates of my training progress so you can share my agony and ecstasy. Perhaps you too will be inspired to put on your training shoes and join me.
