My Story
At the age of 74 I am running the London marathon again!
In October 2022 I ran the London Marathon along with my wife Val. It was an amazing experience. Val has never ran a marathon before but for me it was my third marathon. My first two were decades ago in 1986 and 1988 and for all practical purposes I trained and ran as a beginner. Val ran in 6hr 24min and my time was 5hr 50min. Both our times were better than we expected.
We ran for Brain Research UK because we both have very personal reasons. I had a massive brain injury in 2017 after a cycling accident and was admitted to Massachusettes General Hospital where I had a bilateral craniotomy to drain a large sub-dural haematoma. Following this I had to have intensive rehabilitation to restore my balance and speech. Val had additional reasons to run for BRUK as her mother has severe dementia. We also have friends who have Alzheimer's and a close friend who is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. My brother had a stroke which left him severely disabled and he finally succumbed after a long illness.
Brain Research UK does cutting edge research into many conditions that afflict the brain especially dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, brain injuries, brain tumours, strokes, epilepsy, Parkinson's Disease and many other neuro degeneratve diseases.
Having achieved our dreams of running in 2022, Val decided she did not want to do another marathon but I felt that I wanted to give it another go. I was unfortunately unsuccessful in the open ballot but was very lucky to have been offered a place to run again for BRUK. For this I am eternally grateful to their excellent team to have put faith in me again.
Last year the money raised was phenominal and beyond our expectations. As I write, this money has already been put to good use in initiating research in important projects. I hope that I can rely on my wonderful family, friends, colleagues and kind hearted strangers to dig deep and support this charity and its vital work.
Many thanks for reading this and for your encouragement.
