My Story

I am a full time NHS Cancer Consultant and I see day in and day out how cancer destroys dreams, individuals and families. Cancer is a brutal disease and does not discriminate. It destroys people physically, mentally and economically. I love curing cancer, but a cancer prevented will always be better than a cancer cured. With 200 different types of cancer, money for research soon runs out. Clinical trials are my passion and I put all my patients into clinical trials if available, that is the only way in which cure rates increase and less toxic treatments develop. We should always aim to cure cancer, but if we can’t, then we need treatments to convert cancer into a chronic disease rather than a life limiting one. Cancer will affect 1 in 2 of us, so we either bury our heads in the sand or we tackle it. The fight against cancer for me is personal. I see first-hand how CRUK money goes from bench to clinic developing wonder drugs (which I call cancer kryptonite) that change lives. I am happy to talk the talk, but also, in this case, more than happy to run the run.
