My Story
“But why?!”
That has been the main question asked of me since I thought attempting my first marathon would be a good idea.
David Erwin is to blame truth be told. Racing enthusiast, long suffering breeder and organiser of the London Property Raceday at Ascot every Summer. Out of guilt at my inability to take a table at the function I said I would try and support via the silent auction. Given I had just received some pics from siblings recent nuptials that week, none of which I enhanced the aesthetics of, the WellChildgolden ticket caught my eye... and so it began.
My brother, a keen athlete, skilfully (and bluntly) avoided becoming entangled in this project but he did find Vicki Taylor for me who has enhanced my life in many ways since our first zoom meeting in late July 2022.
WellChild as a charity have crossed my network in many ways, mainly through their links with the world of UK sport, and horseracing in particular. Indeed their name carried the title of the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2021 during those horrible Covid times, in a partnership which was the first of its kind with The Jockey Club. Their work in endeavouring sick children to be cared for at home with their families rather than in hospital is probably as acute a point presently than ever before.
I am also grateful to the Challenge Events team at WellChild for allowing me to add a further beneficiary to my efforts - Emily Oliver’s Fighting Fund for the Brain Tumour Charity Emily lost her life far too soon so there is a theme of caring for the youth running through the beneficiaries of my efforts.
All proceeds will be split equally between the two charities.
Training has not been without hiccups, starting literally from the couch will do that to an overweight 41yr old body I guess! To think my first session on July 25th was 30secs jogging and 90secs walking, and now I regularly run over 40km a week (and building) is personally somewhat extraordinary! But the achilles and feet have not been without issue! My training has taken me from the roads, commons, cricket clubs of Esher and surrounds, Kilrush Woods and Ennis in Co. Clare, the excellent recreational ground in Leighlinbridge Co. Carlow, St. Paul de Vence in France and lastly Fort Myers in Florida…. have sneaks will travel I guess!
My thanks to Jamie Lloyd for keeping me on the road thoughout.
Over the coming weeks, updates will be posted to this page as well as on Instagram @scobiec_ to keep people appraised of progress.
