My Story

I'm running the London Marathon for the Together for Short Lives Charity in memory of my beautiful 1 year old son Ted.

When my 7 month old son Ted was diagnosed with an incurable heart condition called Pulmonary Vein Stenosis we were told we would lose him any day. Ted being the very brave and strong little boy that he was went through numerous surgeries and kept fighting for another 5 months. An amazing 5 months with lots of memories made.

Shortly after Teds 1st Birthday and his last procedure it became clear that Ted was getting worse. We made the decision to take Ted home from Birmingham Children's Hospital Intensive Care Unit and care for him at home. We were lucky enough to be able to access 24/7 end of life care at home or we would have had no choice but to stay in hospital and say our goodbyes there surrounded by hospital staff. Being at home meant everything to us. We made more precious memories that you cant in a hospital room and we were all able to snuggle on the sofa and have some privacy, the normal every day things that we weren't able to do in hospital.

Ted passed away in our arms at home a few days later. Because we were able to take Ted home, he was also able to stay with us at home in a cuddle cot afterwards. We didnt have to leave Ted until we said our final goodbyes at his funeral. I dont even want to think about how different things would have been for us and Ted had we not have been able to access 24/7 end of life care at home.

We have been working closely with Together for Short Lives on their #EveryDayEveryNight campaign which is fighting for 24/7 end of life care to be available for all children in England, it is currently only available in very few areas, its a postcode lottery. Every parent, irrespective of their location should have the right to bring their child home and access end of life care if that is what they wish to do.

Together for Short Lives are an amazing charity who support children who have life-limiting and life-threatneing conditions. They are campaigning for such important changes.

Please help me on my journey running in memory of my son Ted. Thank you for all your support. Kev
