My Story

Hi. I'm Melissa Pacheco Maia Mesquita, also known as "Mel". I'm a mother of 2 boys and married since 1998, for almost 25 years.

I'm an architect from Brazil. I have 3 importants pilars in my life: God (spirit), Family (soul) and running (body). They are in order of importance, but at the same time, they are all essential to my life because they are connected.

Well, Let's talk about how I become a runner and, and how I become a marathonist
I always liked sports as a young girl. Everything that was related to sports, in general, or any sort of competition, I always participated
After I gave birth to my second child, in 2006. l gained a lot of weight and did not recognize myself. My husband notice that I was sad and encouraged me to start boxing, in 2007.

My coach always made us run 2km at the end of the practice. After a few classes he notice that I had potencial as a runner and invite me to try a new challenge - run my first 10km in 12 weeks, and I said Yes.

In May 2007 I ran my 10km for the first time and never stopped since then. One year later I started training with a new coach, and ran my first Half Marathon in Rio de Janeiro.

In october 2010, after almost 3 years of training I ran my first Marathon in Buenos Aires.

In 2011 and 2012, I had a injury in my hip and I had to descrease the intensity of my training and started cycling to recover for my bad hip

2013, was a important year for me as a runner, I got my personal record time in a Marathon -3:29:15 in Buenos Aires. My new PR guaranteed me a spot in the 2015 Boston Marathon, my first Major.

After that I ran Amsterdan in 2014, Chicago in 2016, New York in 2017, Disney in 2018, Berlin in 2019, The Virtual Boston Marathon in 2021 and Rio de Janeiro in 2022.

Now I'm trying to get a Spot in my 5th Major next Year and I'm really greatfull for the opportunity to accomplish that dream and at the same time, and most important, and I'm grateful to be able to help the United Kingdom Thalassaemia society to raise funds to help all people in need that are supported by the instituion
