My Story

'No one should have to face Dementia alone'.... I need your help to make a difference!

Dementia is a cruel disease and watching my Mum slowly fade away over 5 years was a difficult time for our family. Mum was the matriach of our family, the centre of the family that kept us all together. She was diagnosed in 2015 with Vascular Dementia and this cruel disease eventually took her life and she passed in 2020.

Living with Vascular Dementia was tough for mum, I remember when I last saw her in person, I had travelled back to the UK from our new home in Australia. It was 2016 and we shared a moment together having a go at her beloved crossword. Mum was always brilliant at them...she explained to me that she was finding it harder to do them. To watch her struggle with something as enjoyable as a puzzle, which she could do with her eyes closed was tough to watch. She had to finish up at work, her driving license was taken away from her along with her dignity. Mum always found it easy to relax, when Dementia came along she began to fidget, she would often walk around the house, forget what she was doing and in the last few months of her life she could not remember me or her grandchildren.

To me seeing Mum like this was sould destroying, it broke all of our hearts. We don't want anyone to have to go through what we endured.

So this is where you guys come in...

I will be running the TCS London Marathon in April 2023 to raise money for Dementia UK in particular the Admiral Nurses that do an absoutely amazing job to support individuals and their families that are faced with Dementia.

Your donation WILL go towards increasing the number of Admiral Nurses, so that they can offer a lifeline to more families living with this cruel disease. As dementia specialists, Admiral Nurses help by:

managing complex needs in the families.

considering the person living with dementia and the people around them, which for me was my amazing sister and brother, who were Mum's primary carers.

giving their support so that the patient can stay independent for longer.

supporting the families caring for their loved ones, so that they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days.

They work in different care settings: in the community, in care homes, on the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline, in hospitals, in hospices and in clinics. However, there just isn't enough of them out there!

So PLEASE dig deep and donate to help Dementia UK increase their Admiral Nurse team and offer that lifeline to the thousands of families living with Dementia.

THANK-YOU! 🙏
