My Story
On the 23rd of April I'm running the London Marathon, raising money for Dementia UK
I'm running as a tribute to my Mum who passed away recently. She was affected by dementia for many years, first through caring for my Dad who died in 2010 and had both Alzheimers and Vascular Dementia and then after her own diagnosis with Alzheimers in 2013. She did so well and I miss her hugely but I'm also so proud of her.
I've always wanted to do the London Marathon, being a bit of a runner, well jogger really, and living in London it has always been something I wanted to do 'one day'. It seems the time has come and I'm so excited to join the Dementia UK team.
Supporting people living with dementia is very close to my heart. As well as my Mum and Dad many other family members have been affected, including my In-Laws. So many of my friends are also supporting loved ones with one form of the disease or another.
It's a tough journey and one that can be long. It's often 8-10 years that a person lives with dementia and the focus needs to be on having the best quality of life. There is still a life to be had, albeit a different life, both for the sufferer and their families, but a life to be lived nonetheless.
I was able to enjoy many special times with my Mum, even in the later years, but to get there I needed to learn a different way of being with her. I struggled to understand what was happening to her at first and how to support her. Raising awareness of dementia is so important to help people find the suppport they need. Dementia UK funds amazing Admiral nurses that help provide that much needed support and care.
A huge thank you to you for your support which will keep me going in the training and on the day. I may be a little slow these days but I am very determined!
Thank you everyone
