Running London Marathon in Memory of Róise
My Story
I have decided to run the 2023 London Marathon in April in memory of Róise. I will be raising money for the mental health charity Mind.
Mental illnesses don't discriminate. They can affect those of any age, gender and background. We must destigmatise talking about mental health and look out for our friends and family. Mind's work is so important and can truly help save lives - please donate.
Words from Róise's brother Patrick:
Growing up, Róise was sporty and active - which is actually quite funny looking back as she was always much more into reading, making art, and listening to music. Despite being small, she played rugby, gaelic football, and even gave camogie a shot - indicative of her courage and her love of defying expectations!
I have many rich memories of us down in McGinleys, playing rounders and block or some random game we had made up earlier that week - which would be made all the more exciting when ‘the cousins from Galway’ would visit Glenswilly and nothing short of chaos would unfold!
Truth be told, Róise despised running; even the one time when she braced herself up for the local 5K fun run. There is a picture of her doing it, her face bright red from exertion, which gives us a great laugh.
Róise always did everything at her own pace, in her own time, with a distinctive flair that only she had - I wouldn’t have her any other way.
Trying to summarise Róise in mere words is an impossible task. The impact she had on others was staggering. She had a truly unique gift - she could see the beauty in things that others would consider broken beyond repair. Her kindness & empathy knew no bounds.
She was a home for those in pain, the misfits, those who didn’t quite understand their place in the world.
I cannot thank her enough for this. I am, and always have been, proud to be her brother.
We as a family are honoured and deeply touched that Orla is going to run in memory of Róise. The work that Mind do is massively important, and literally helps save lives. If you can, please donate to this worthy cause.
