My Story

I am running the London Marathon this April and will be raising money for JDRF: the type 1 diabetes charity funding world-class medical research to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a life-changing, debilitating disease, currently without a cure, often diagnosed in children and young adults. 400,000 people, like me, including 29,000 children in the UK, currently manage the disease every day of every year without a break.

Our body stops producing insulin which controls blood-sugar levels.  So, for the rest our lives, we need to monitor our blood-sugar, multiple times a day, and manage it by adding insulin, via injections or insulin pumps.  Insulin is not a cure; there is no known cure which is why it's so important to invest more in research.

As well as funding vital research JDRF accelerate access to type 1 treatment technologies and medicines whilst working tirelessly to support those living with T1D, by providing trusted information and hosting community events.

Type 1 diabetes is usually invisible to others yet can be extremely challenging to juggle with everyday life. The mental and physical toll it takes on you can be a full-time job, and can cause many people with the condition to suffer from other illnesses such as anxiety, depression, nerve damage, retinopathy.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 14, that's almost 32 years ago.

I'd like to dream that someone diagnosed at 14 today won't have to wait another 32 years to see a breakthrough, that's why I'm running on behalf of JDRF.

So, my small ask of you is to give anything you can towards funding JDRF and help me WIN the London Marathon on 23rd April, because like the thousands of other winners that day, I'm a dreamer who will never give up.

Thank you.

Phil
